Recruited multiple African American men to his campus who “talk” to students’ experiences and explicitly help them process the challenges of being African American Men. There are pervasive individual and small group conversations about values and coping skills. These men contextualize students’ individual real-time decision making in terms of being an African American male. They share personal stories to model how they’ve navigated school, life, family, career, and the systems of our society as African American Men, joining with students, rather than pushing them away or insisting that they give up who they are to be successful in school. In addition, many of the non-African American male staff hold an explicit orientation of listening and learning. One of the mental health counselors said, “I can’t say that I understand your reality. I want to know more about it. I need to listen carefully and constantly learn and accept each student’s experience.”
