EnCAS, the school’s after school program, had instructors who used explicit classroom agreements. They were observed doing a “check-in” with students about their day, which led to individual and group reflection on positive experiences in the day program and areas of struggle. Highly culturally responsive, the teachers functioned as mentors, encouraging, prodding, and guiding students to celebrate and problem solve their relationships with their peers and teachers.
